3 Amazing Times Celebs Have Appeared In Video Game Franchises

When you encounter the voice of a star in a video game, are you excited or does it immediately take you out of the action? Whatever your opinion on celeb voices in video games, there are certainly plenty of examples where developers have chosen to invest in star power and not always with brilliant results. Here are some key examples of iconic voices that you might recognize from your own favorite titles.

Leonard Nimoy – Kingdom Hearts

To be honest, Kingdom Hearts is an absolute incredible melting pot of different celebrity voices coming together in various ways, and that’s to be expected. After all, the game is based around the idea of traveling to different Disney themed worlds. But no one would have predicted that Leonard Nimoy could have been persuaded to voice the villain of the piece. The late, great Nimoy lent his voice to Master Xehanort in a prequel that showcased Ansem’s rise to power. If you’re already lost and you’ve never played this game, you’re missing out on the serie’s infamous complex plot. Nimoy was great as the seasoned teacher who quickly transformed into the master of evil. Kingdom Hearts is also home to various other great voices including Haley Joel Osment, Hayden Panettiere, and Jodie Benson. It’s honestly worth playing just to hear all the star power behind the scenes.

Peter Dinklage – Destiny

Destiny was surrounded by excitement even before it’s release. However, it quickly become clear upon launch day that the title was not going to live up to expectations. There were many reasons for this, and plenty of people believe development was rushed to meet a scheduled release date. Unfortunately, Dinklage’s turn as Ghost, in-game guide became embroiled in the controversy. Dinklage was criticized for putting very little effort into his voice over. Although many though the actor did his best with shady dialogue, others claimed it should have been a female voice over, similar to the AI in Half-Life. In any case, the damage to the game’s rep meant that the entire script was re-recorded with a different actor. Destiny, to be honest, remains, a fairly average game and even the sequel doesn’t live up to the hype.

Mark Hamill – Arkham Series

Of course, on the other side of the scales, there’s Mark Hamill. Hamill is famous for playing Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but he has gained a lot of recognition for his voiceover work, particularly his take on the Joker in Batman. To this day many people believe, Hamill is the definitive depiction of the joker and should be asked to play him on screen. It’s unlikely this will ever happen, but his voice-over work in the Arkham series certainly made it the masterpiece that it’s viewed as today. There’s always the hope Hamill will return to this character one day. He has a lot of affection for the role. Many people don’t realize that Tim Curry was originally supposed to play the Joker but Hamill claimed the role instead and the rest is history.

What famous actors and actresses do you remember most from the video games you play?
