Fallout, the award-winning series of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games are known in the gamesphere are some of the best role-playing games (RPGs) in the world. Of all of the Fallout games, Fallout 4 is often described as being ‘the best role-playing game on the market,’ but is that the case?

Of course, not every gamer would agree with that statement – many gamers believe it is more of a first person shooter (FPS) game, rather than an RPG. Admittedly, Fallout 4 is also a fantastic FPS gamer, which means that it effortlessly combines both genres of game play; mixing the enjoyment of shooting in the first person with an in-depth back story. It may not be as good as Fallout Vegas when it comes to the narrative that’s in place, but it is still described as a fantastic RPG by many gamers.

Before Fallout 4, many of the Fallout games, such as Fallout Vegas, for instance, focused more on FPS experience, rather than on RPG. However, that is where Fallout 4 differs from the other Fallout games because it comes with a deep and complex back story, which is an integral part of game play. However, this doesn’t come with such a deep narrative or character backstory, as many of the other Fallout games have done. Fallout 4 has a gigantic map system, settlement building, and plenty of side quests – like many gamers in LitRPG forum state that it has a lot to offer any gamer. For some gamers, the complexity of the Fallout 4 narrative is too much, but others love the complexity of it.

However, despite the complex narratives that Fallout 4 offers, many gamers defined the game as being the worst RPG on the market. Although by definition Fallout 4 is an RPG because you, as the player, have to fill a role, many gamers believe that in essence, it is not an RPG. Due to how quickly Fallout 4 can be completed, many gamers feel that it’s more of an FPS game rather than an RPG, as it lacks a complex enough storyline and narrative to be an RPG.

The argument is that in previous Fallout games, the RPG had much more complex storylines for characters, with a range of narratives, with the actions of one player impacting every other player. There is a lack of a strong karma system, which means that your actions as a player have less impact on other people within the game, like with previous Fallout games.

To conclude, there are mixed views on Fallout 4 and whether it is the best role-playing game on the market. Some gamers believe it is, while others think that it is more of an FPS game as it has more gunplay and action than the other Fallout games. While the landscapes and maps are incredible, many gamers report that the characters themselves are lacking unique and interesting narratives – the game has a good backstory, but the characters do not.

Do you play Fallout 4? What would you say it is, an FPS game or an RPG?
