Assassin’s Creed Syndicate to Include Transgender Character

Posted September 25, 2015 by Kat in News

In an impressive first for the Assassin’s Creed series, Ubisoft has revealed that they will be having a transgender character in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – the first ever time we’ll see such a character for the franchise.

The reported character in question is Ned Wynert, a transgender male that serves as one of the game’s quest-giving NPCs.

Creative director for the game Marc-Alexis Côté discussed the incorporation of this character saying, “Inclusiveness is something that’s super important for us as a team. We’ve made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game.

This comes after last year’s Assassin’s Creed Unity rather notably lacked any playable female characters, something for which Ubisoft received a fair amount of criticism from the gaming community. However, Syndicate also will be amending that, as the two playable protagonists for Syndicate will be the brother and sister characters Jacob and Evie Frye.

Eurogamer reportedly played through two quests that involved Wynert, and stated that no references to the character’s gender were made. Côté explained that they want players to form their own opinions about Wynert.

Ubisoft has further amended the opening to the series, which in the past has referenced being developed by “a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs.” It now states “by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
