Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is a Reboot
At this year’s Gamescom, some surprising information came out about the upcoming Mirror’s Edge title – the kind that certainly seems to somewhat go against expectations for the title. Instead of being a prequel, as was initially believed by many, developer DICE has now actually revealed that it’s a reboot.
The game’s designer director Erik Oeldahl talked a bit about this, saying, “Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is a reboot. We basically took the things we really liked about the first game. Faith, first and foremost, the first-person free-running gameplay, and also the aesthetics, which we’ve built on, of course.”
He then added, “But it’s a reboot. We’re telling Faith’s origin story, so the events of the first game actually don’t really exist. Maybe they will at one time in the future.”
While this is certainly unexpected in terms of the original game’s existence in the timeline, what this also indicates is the possibility of there being more games in the series. Both Electronic Arts and DICE have expressed enormous enthusiasm about this particular IP, so if Catalyst were to do well, perhaps we could hope to see more Mirror’s Edge titles down the line.
Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst has been confirmed for release Feb 23, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
