Metal Gear Solid V Takes Less Space on the PS4 than Previous Titles

Metal Gear Solid V

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be out in just over a month and one somewhat surprising fact about the title has come to light: not only do we know the exact file size it will take for a download on the PlayStation 4, but it’s actually smaller than what was required for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

According to the game’s listing on the Japanese PlayStation Store, The Phantom Pain will require 25.1 GB of space on the PS4.  Whereas Guns of the Patriots took up 26.6 GB of space.  Given that the title is a large open-world game, it’s to be expected that it would have a rather large space requirement.

Publisher Konami has not addressed this space issue, and hopefully will at some point in the future; but possible explanations include the fact that it will have real-time cutscenes, that there’s less audio than in previous titles (especially from Snake himself) or even just the fact that it might have really good compression.

By comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt requires 50 GB, Batman: Arkham Knight takes up 45 GB, and Bloodborne comes in at 25.3 GB.  Meanwhile, the PS3 version of The Phantom Pain will require 11.7 GB of space.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be out September 1 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
