Titanfall 2 And The DLC Map Pack Dilemma

The CEO of Respawn Entertainment had a very interesting chat with IGN.com recently. As many of you probably already know, Titanfall 2 is in development and it will be a multiplatform game. Interestingly enough, that isn’t the ‘news’ that was, well, interesting.

Instead, the knowledge nuggets that were revealed in that talk centered in on what CEO and founder Vince Zampella said about what he wished for their debut title as well as what they learned from the whole experience.

Initially, the discussion was that he wished their debut had been multiplatform so that so many more could have joined in the grand experience that was Titanfall. He explained that the exclusivity deal was more of a business decision that was needed to even get them off their feet to do the game in the first place. Their plan was always to be multiplatform hence the expected announcement for the sequel. Also, Zampella revealed a lesson learned concerning their multiplayer-only strategy offered in the original game as well.

“Maybe we could have mixed things up a bit better because some people blew right by it and didn’t even see it because there was so much action happening around it. It’s tough, because if you hit people over the head with it it becomes intrusive, and there are people who don’t want or care about it. Where does the needle fall? I think it takes a while to figure that out and we haven’t figured it out yet.”

Despite that admission, he never did say that the sequel would have a single player mode and that he doesn’t regret making the original game that way at all. Personally, I don’t mind having a multiplayer only experience for games either but in doing so, the lackluster offering of modes in Titanfall led to the game definitely having a short lifespan in the minds of most gamers. The addition of Frontier Defense was a solid mode addition that had promise but it should have been a part of the initial offering. Also, many pilots would have clamored back for more for longer if the weapons and Titans had more attachments and just plain more offerings. The addition of a few counter-measures or Battlefield style Rush mode would have changed up the experience. Still, the pilot and Titan AI duo was certainly groundbreaking when it came to interesting gameplay.

As the convo continued though, there was an interesting revelation Zampella revealed that he agreed with the recent decision by the makers of Evolve to make future map packs free in order to unify their entire user base.

 “I think having the maps like that in packs, it does split the community and it makes it harder for matchmaking, it’s messy. Yeah. I don’t know we won’t do it again, I can’t say that for sure, but the idea would be to do something different.”

Considering both Evolve and Titanfall have somewhat similar structure in being multiplayer heavy, keeping the entire user base able to play on ALL of the offered maps would seem to be a win win situation for all involved. The players would have better matchmaking due to more people playing on all of the maps rather than isolating those new maps to only people who paid for the DLC or map packs. While Call of Duty and Battlefield seem to have no problem with this strategy, it is interesting to see if any other multiplayer games adopt this strategy.

If you think about it, this is probably the way gamers would like to see the DLC set up. Save the paid DLC for expansions that actually provide new modes, characters, classes, and story content. Gamers have always been peeved about having to pay for DLC that only adds additional maps to play on.
