Robert Kirkman Talks Payday-esque Walking Dead Next Gen Game

Walking Dead

Payday developer Overkill announced a year ago that they were working on a Walking Dead game with Robert Kirkman. Just as the gameplay is in Payday, the thought is that their game is to be a coop FPS with tons of action and a decent size to hack and blast through zombies in. Recently, at SXSW, Robert Kirkman sat at a panel and discussed the upcoming game a bit:

“I can say that it will be Payday-esque because [Starbreeze and Overkill] are currently doing Payday,” Kirkman said (via Polygon). “But I’m told it will be in a bigger world than Payday currently encompasses. They are going to be learning a lot of stuff from Payday that they will be incorporating into the Walking Dead game. There will be announcements about the game very soon.”

As the panel went on, of course, Robert Kirkman did comment on the reason for the success of the TellTale Games and the poor reception of Activision’s Walking Dead:Survival Instinct game. In a nutshell, he basically spoke about how Walking Dead’s success is all about the leveraging the atmosphere of the comic’s style rather than a simple ‘Hey, I’m playing as Rick Grimes shooting stuff’.

It will be interesting to see how much of a buzz a game like this will get given that we’ve already received an excellent zombie game from the likes of Techland’s Dying Light. I’m certain Dead Island 2 will drop before this Walking Dead game does so it will be interesting to see what kind of interest there will be.
