Can Pure Hold’em be the breakthrough for casino-based video games?

Posted March 24, 2015 by Felisha "Nightingale" Silva in Editorials

Playing casino games has long remained a popular form of entertainment for millions of people across the world who enjoy the drama and suspense of playing odds-based games that could result in considerable amounts of money being won. A single turn of a card, slot machine or roulette wheel could make all the difference between winning and losing, and while famous casinos across Las Vegas and Macau continue to attract millions of customers every year, players now have a more modernistic way of playing their favorite games.

Online gaming websites and make it possible for people to play from the comfort of their own home, with casino games available at royal vegas online casino and many other sites. Gaming apps extend the ability to play a few hands of poker or roulette spins whilst on the go via a mobile or tablet device, but there is one market in which casino games have failed to catch fire. The video gaming industry has yet to see a casino-based title take off and become a big hit with the gaming community, and although there is a demand for games of this type, recent offerings have never really captured the true ambience and excitement of playing casino games. It remains to be seen whether upcoming poker-based game Pure Hold’em, developed by VooFoo, will change the trend and create a succession of console titles that bring the casino to the Xbox or PlayStation.

 Premature Impact

While many genres continue to receive considerable coverage from game developers who strive to meet consumer demand for high quality titles, casino-based games has been somewhat left behind. Red Dead Redemption and Fallout: New Vegas are examples of two hugely successful titles which included the likes of poker, blackjack and roulette as mini-games that gamers can enjoy when they are not playing the main story, but stand-alone poker games have been few and far between. Full House Poker, Poker Night 2 and World Series of Poker: Full House Pro are the most recent games to hit current generation consoles, and while both were well received by gamers, they ultimately made a premature impact and did little to ensure casino-based games made a long-awaited break in the industry. The latter was arguably the best free-to-play poker game to be released on console, but its success was limited; although Pipeworks Software included in-game purchases for gamers to customize their character’s clothing, card pattern, chair covers and table felt, it remained in existence for just 18 months as the game was delisted and closed its servers earlier this month.

 Pure Hold’em

Pure Hold’em is set to provide single player and multiplayer modes for gamers to enjoy, with both enabling gamers to feel the adrenaline rush of playing tournament poker as they attempt to beat their fellow opponents and reach the top. The game provides full online multiplayer support which will enable gamers to create a tournament for up to eight of their friends and enjoy an element of friendly rivalry, while there is also the option of jumping into an open table to face other games playing from all areas of the world. What may set Pure Hold’em apart from previous attempts to create the true video poker game is the wonderful high definition graphics and textures that are used within every aspect of the game. An atmospheric casino and VIP penthouse – exclusively available to those who reach the Aces and Masters table – are beautifully designed using intricate detail which creates the closest experience of what it feels like to play in a real life casino. Even the table felts, chip stacks and cards are designed with quality in mind to give the same appearance and feel as playing in Monaco or Las Vegas. Although it remains to be seen whether all of these components are accompanied by a smooth gameplay engine that creates life-like tension, drama and excitement during each hand, Pure Hold’em certainly appears to have all the qualities of what a poker-based console game should include.
