World of Warcraft Still Has Much More to Come

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft may not be in the news as much as it once was, and even though its subscribers are down, it still remains a powerhouse in the world of MMOs.  As the game is launching its truly impressive 10-year anniversary coming up next month, Blizzard has discussed some of the plans for the future of the game – as well as some of the unexpected changes it brought to their company as a developer.

Among the plans for the future?  More new content following the release of the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion, also due for launch next month.  Not only is this the game’s fifth expansion, but Blizzard has stated that they have many more ideas of what will follow; and that their development team has never been bigger.  As executive producer J Allen Brack explained: “The World of Warcraft team is 50 percent larger today than it was when we shipped Mists of Pandaria [in 2012].  We’re already working on the next expansion. We already have ideas for the expansion after that. We’ve never been larger. We’ve never been more forward-thinking about the types of things that we can do with World of Warcraft.”

Blizzard’s Chris Metzon also discussed how the success of the game made the developer bigger than they were initially planning.  “Maybe this is too harsh, but World of Warcraft’s success was one of the biggest challenges we ever faced,” Metzen said. “It challenged our character. It challenged our culture, the growth and the complexity, for a team that had been very tight.

Your thinking can begin to become a little institutionalized. You start to think a little more systemically, like, ‘Oh god, don’t break it, keep all the plates spinning, we’ve got to keep this up.'”

Warlords of Draenor launches November 13 and is currently available for pre-order.
