Moving over to next generation consoles seems a natural transition for console gamers who wish to experience the very best graphics, animation technology and processing speeds – all on a high definition screen. However, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners are yet to experience the endless hours of drama, excitement and tension created by casino games that are replicated from land-based and online casinos onto console titles. Poker Night 2 is among numerous games that have perfectly captured the gameplay experience of how players enter a battle of wits against each other to make calculated bets as each hand progresses. It has generated considerable interest from a gaming community that demand more poker and casino games, with Poker Night 2 becoming one of the most popular titles in its genre. The vast availability of online casinos like Casino Saga may always mean that they will hold considerable market control, but the success enjoyed by Poker Night 2 illustrates that the demand for casino-based console games exists.

Although the existence of game development coverage across current generation and next generation consoles may soon be coming to and end, Poker Night 2 shows that you do not have to fork out for a new console to receive a game enriched in the qualities of the most popular card game that is played across the world. Poker Night 2 was developed and released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita and PC to ensure the gaming community could enjoy playing their title on the best formats at the time of release.

Gamers who own a PlayStation 4 and feel they are missing on the wonderful gameplay features and online tournaments provided by Poker Night 2 can also enjoy the game themselves. Gaikai, a cloud streaming service, was integrated into the console’s hardware components to create backwards compatibility; this allows gamers to stream PlayStation 3 games onto their next generation console, therefore creating the opportunity to play Poker Night 2 and not miss out on the action.

Game modes:

Poker Night 2, developed by Telltale, manages to combine the suspense of each hand being drastically affected by the turn of a single card with the fun element of playing poker against the computer. Impressive graphics and easy-to-play control make it the ideal console game for players of all skill levels, whether they are new to poker or experienced card players. The former is provided with a “How to Play” section that covers every aspect of poker in simple and easy to understand language; the walkthrough covers the basic gameplay rules, chip values and the order of winning hands from high card all the way up to royal flush. Poker Night 2 does not disappoint for variety, with gamers able to enjoy a number of game modes, which include Texas hold ‘em and Omaha hold ’em, and difficulty settings to provide the best tailored gameplay experience for everyone. Although there is no multi-player mode on any format, the game certainly delivers through the use of popular video game characters in a 3D environment that makes poker fun to play for gamers of all ages and gender.

Characters and unlockable items:

Numerous poker-based console games focus upon character interaction that nicely accompany gameplay functions and graphics that re-create the same feeling as playing in a luxurious land-based casino. Other titles utilise the use of profile avatars to represent each

player at the table, but Poker Night 2 integrates the element of iconic gaming through allowing gamers to choose from a selection of recognizable characters from popular titles. Ash Williams (The Evil Dead), Sam (Sam & Max), Claptrap (Borderlands) and Brock Samsong (The Venture Bros.) provide humorous conversations between themselves and towards the player, with GLaDOS (Portal) playing a supporting role as the dealer. This is combined with a game market which allows players to earn new character skins, poker tables and card decks to customise their layout and create a novel incentive to do well during tournaments.
