Rise of the Tomb Raider Will Be Xbox Exclusive

Posted August 13, 2014 by Kat in News

While fans rejoiced at announcement of the next Tomb Raider, follow-up to last year’s successful reboot, made at this year’s E3, we can now take comfort in the confirmation that the game will indeed be releasing in time for Holidays in 2015.  But the somewhat-more-unfortunate news coming out of Gamescom is that this title is intended to be an Xbox exclusive, unlike its predecessor.

During Microsoft’s Gamescom presentation, Crystal Dynamics head Darrel Gallagher explained:

Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider.  Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming.  Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011.”

He then went on to say that they aren’t “walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC.

So does this mean the game will eventually make its way to other systems?  That remains to be seen.  Xbox head Phil Spencer would say only that “In Holiday 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusive to Xbox.  That’s the comment.”  In the meanwhile, PC and PlayStation fans will have to hope that this exclusive-Xbox is only for a duration at initial release, and not a permanent fixture.
