It’s Friday, and you know what that means, right? It’s time for another Weekly News Rundown, where I take the gaming news from the past week, and give you the ‘rundown’ of what exactly is going on in the realm of video games. It could be big news, or just something fun I felt like talking about. Some news from Microsoft happened the beginning of this week, some big news in fact.

Phil Spencer, former chief of Microsoft Studios, is now ‘Head of Xbox’. Spencer is now responsible for leading the entire Xbox business, including Xbox Live, Xbox Video, and Xbox Music. Spencer said in a statement:

Combining these teams will strengthen the connection between some of the world’s most innovative creators and those building the Xbox itself. It’s been a remarkable year for Xbox and I am honored to lead the team at this incredible time for Microsoft and the games industry.

Spencer’s becoming ‘Head of Xbox’, has been pretty well received by the gaming community. So far, everybody is pretty pleased about his promotion.

Now onto some more news regarding Microsoft, some on the not-so-good side.

It was reported day before yesterday that some employees, though we have no exact number on how many, were laid off from Microsoft. So far we have seen two ex-employees that have tweeted about their layoffs from the company. One that was tweeted on the 2nd, said this: “I got laid off from Microsoft today…I…I’m free? I’M FREEEEEEE!” -Patrick Loughman (@el_PatrickL). So far only Artist Patrick Loughman and technical producer Elbert Perez were confirmed as having been laid off from the company. A spokesperson for Microsoft sent a statement to IGN, that stated:

At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of our commitment to this goal, we are always evaluating our development priorities, and there are times when decisions need to be made to realign plans and refocus our efforts. Microsoft Studios continues to grow as an overall organization as we focus and invest in key priority areas that will drive future profitable growth.

It seems every time I’m reading through gaming news nowadays, there’s layoffs somewhere. What’s going on

Now, we’re going to talk about the Nintendo 3DS. This week alone, we have had three new versions of the 3DS/2DS announced. First we heard about Disney-themed 3DS XL that will be available only at Wal-Mart and will come packaged with the new Disney Magical World game as a bundle. That bundle will be at a Wal-Mart near you come April 11th. Then, we heard about another Disney one, but for the 2DS. The 2DS will not come with the game, but with a Disney carrying case. The 2DS will also be donning a new color – A white front with pink buttons and a pink back. This one will only be available through GameStop. And lastly, we found out that Europe will be getting a pink 2DS, the exact opposite color scheme of the other; Pink front with white buttons and a white back. This one is being released on May 16th, in honor of the new Kirby: Triple Deluxe game, though the system will not come with the game. No news yet as to whether we will be seeing that one here in North America or not.

Now to wind things down and let you all know what games came out this week! Nothing too crazy, but definitely some pretty good titles, especially the one that released today!

March 31st:

  • Shovel Knight (Wii U, 3DS, PC)

April 1st:

  • Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate Deluxe Edition (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC)

  • Mercenary Kings (PS4)

April 4th:

  • Elder Scrolls Online (PC)
  • A highly anticipated online game that I just cannot wait to get my hands on!

Now, if you don’t mind, I bid you all adieu, and I will be on my way to go get my hands on some Elder Scrolls Online. Until next time! Peace, Love, and Video Games! Nightingale out!
