Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct

Posted April 8, 2014 by Felisha "Nightingale" Silva in News

Today’s Nintendo Direct was all about one game: Super Smash Bros. The game will come out for both the Wii U and the 3DS, and they announced that the 3DS version will come out this summer, while the Wii U version will come out this winter. The game will run at 60 fps on the 3DS, but as for the Pokemon summons, those will run at 30 fps.

The main difference between the Wii U and 3DS versions are the stages. Each version has its own set of stages. And as for the shared stages between the Wii U and 3DS, their designs will be different. In the Wii U version there will be two music pieces per stage. In the future they said they would announce some sort of special connection feature between the Wii U and the 3DS. Cross-play of some sort perhaps?

The stages for the 3DS are Reset Bomb Forest, 3D Land (Mario), Spirit Train (Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks), Gerudo Valley (Legend of Zelda), Arena Ferox, Tortimer Island (Animal Crossing: New Leaf), Living Room from Nintendogs, Prism Tower (Pokemon), Rainbow Road (Mario), Find Mii (The mini game from the 3DS), Balloon Fight, and Jungle Japes (Donkey Kong).

As for the Wii U stages, we’ll get Mario Galaxy, Pyrosphere (Metroid), Town and City (Animal Crossing), Boxing Arena from Punch-Out, Pilot Wings, Skyloft (Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword), Windy Hill (Sonic: Lost World), Garden of Hope (Pikmin), Wii Fit Studio, Palutena’s Temple (Kid Icarus), and Halberd.

We will get online multiplayer on both the Wii U and 3DS versions, and you can play with friends only, or with anyone you want! There will be two online game modes: For Fun and For Glory. For Fun will have a random stage, will all items, with Smash Battles only. Only the wins will be recorded. For Glory will be Final Destination only, with no items, 1-on-1 battles, and both wins and losses will be recorded.

Nintendo is always trying to make the internet a little more friendly, especially with their multiplayer on Smash Bros. If players do certain actions during their game, it will result in a temporary ban from online play. So make sure you do not do the following!

  • Start, but don’t play

  • Targeting certain players repeatedly

  • Repeated self-destructs

  • Frequent dropping out

  • Cheating

  • Baseless reports against others.

As long as you do none of the above, you’ll be just fine.

The ranking system in the game will go by “Global Smash Power“, which will basically let you know how many people you’ve outscored in the game. There will be no rankings for multiplayer.

In the game we’ll get a whole slew of items, new and old. Items include Beam Sword, Bumper, Smart Bomb, Motion Sensor Bomb, POW Block, Beetle (Legend of Zelda), Fire Bar, Back Shield, Bombchu, Fairy Bottle, Ore Club, X Bomb, Hocotate Bomb, Rocket Belt, and Steel Diver.

The Assist Trophies are pretty awesome in the game as well: Fi (Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword), Andross, Devil, Knuckle Joe, Saki Amamiya, Lyn, Nintendog, Waluigi, Dr. Wright, Skull Kid (Majora’s Mask), Mother Brain (Super Metroid), Midna (Twilight Princess), Ashley (Wario), Dark Samus, Chain Chomp, Isabelle, Elec Man, and Color TV-Game 15.

Pokemon play a huge part in this new Smash Bros. as well, as they introduce the MasterBall to the game. So many Pokemon that you can use to aid your battles…Arceus, Meowth, Electrode, Eevee, Staryu, Metagross, Fennekin, Meloetta, Gogoat, Entei, Eeoxys, Palkia, Kyurem, Victini, Keldeo, and Xerneas. So many Pokemon, so little time…

We get a ton of returning fighters in the game, such as Samus, and Zero Suit Samus, who will be donning a pair of rocket boots, making her kicks all the more lethal. Twilight Princess Zelda comes back with a new move called Phantom Slash, and she can also turn into Sheik, adding a whole new skill set to the same character. We can also welcome back Kirby, King DededeLucarioOlimar and his Pikmin, Pit, and Yoshi, who stands upright now!

New characters are Megaman with Rush, Rosalina and Luma, Little Mac, The Villager from Animal Crossing, and the Wii Fit Trainer, where you can choose between male or female, both play exactly the same. Two new characters announced on the Direct were Charizard and Greninja. You just have to wonder if that will be the last new characters added to the roster.

Watching this presentation made me all the more excited for this game. I can’t wait for Winter to come, though I hope it comes out sooner. I’m tempted to get both the 3DS and Wii U versions, though I know for sure I’ll be getting it for the Wii U. How hyped are you for the game? Will you get it for the 3DS or Wii U?
