Weekly News Rundown: Facebook Goes Virtual Reality & GBA Comes to Wii U
Hello there, gamers and gamerettes, it’s Friday, and you know what happens on Friday…It’s time for the Weekly News Rundown! And let’s jump right in, shall we?
So, the Oculus Rift, that awesome virtual reality device that has been talked about left and right with virtual reality being the next ‘big thing’ in the gaming world. Earlier this week, the Oculus Rift was bought by Facebook. Yes, you heard me right…the social media site, Facebook.
Mark Zuckerburg announced back on Tuesday that the company would be buying the Oculus Rift for about $2 billion, $400 million in cash, $1.6 billion worth of Facebook stock, and if everything pans out accordingly, and the Oculus Rift meets certain performance requirements, and extra $300 million will be paid.
As we all know, the Oculus Rift was originally pitched for video games, but the way Zuckerburg sees it, he sees potential for even more possibilities. “Oculus has the potential to be the most social platform ever,” Zuckerburg stated. “Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.”
The deal won’t be finalized until later this year, so as for now, Oculus is still working on the gaming aspect of their device. What do you think about Facebook buying the Oculus Rift? Virtual Reality FarmVille, anyone?
It seems that more and more people are leaving gaming companies for other gaming companies these days. We’ve already lost one person who was working on the new Uncharted 4 for the PS4, it’s creative director Amy Hennig, and now we’ve lost the director for the game, Justin Richmond, to League of Legends dev, Riot Games. Richmond said the following in regards to Naughty Dog, the company behind the Uncharted series:
“I love the company and the people and know that they will continue to create awesome games going forward. On a happier note, after careful consideration and exploration I have joined Riot Games. There is some really innovative stuff going on here that I can’t wait to be a part of.”
Uncharted 4 was announced back during the release of the PS4, though no exact release date was specified.
Another piece of news that involves the PS4, the popular PS3 title The Last of Us will be coming to the PS4 sometime this summer, and will also include all of the DLC that has come out for it so far, including “Left Behind” which just released this past Valentine’s Day. The game will be available both physically and digitally through PSN.
Now for a pretty neat little tidbit of news if you don’t know already. As of yesterday, if you have Sonic: Lost World for the Wii U, you can download an all-new level for the game for free. The best part of this DLC, it’s a Legend of Zelda themed zone, complete with Link making cameos on his red Loftwing, and Sonic donning the iconic green tunic.
There are also other familiar Legend of Zelda elements such as Cuccos, rupees, Gorons, and the Triforce. I downloaded the free zone, and I’ve got to tell you, being the insane Legend of Zelda fan that I am, and being a huge Sonic fan, this is the greatest thing ever created. It makes dishing $40 for the game all worth it. If you have the game, and haven’t downloaded this DLC yet, do it, and go do it now!
I’ve got some more Nintendo Wii U news for you. Coming next month, we will be getting GameBoy Advance titles for the Virtual Console service via the eShop. On April 3rd, we get Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Advance Wars for $7.99 each. On April 10th, we’ll get Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Wario Ware Inc.: Mega Microgame$ for $6.99 a piece. On April 17th, we’ll get Golden Sun and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity for $7.99 and $6.99. and lastly on April 24th, we’ll get Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island for $7.99.
Nintendo said to expect to hear more coming soon as to what other titles we can expect.
And now for the final piece of WNR that I do every week, new game releases for the week! Even though all of the heavy hitters came out already, games such as Titanfall, and inFAMOUS: Second Son, we still have some pretty note-worthy games come out this week.
On March 25th, we got:
- Fez (Vita, PS3)
- Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends (Vita, PS3)
- BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (PS3)
- The Witch and the Hundred Knight (PS3)
Fun fact about BlazBlue only being on the PS3 for now, the game is so massive, there wasn’t enough room on an Xbox 360 disc to contain it all. Now that game, I may just have to go out and grab for myself.
