GP Om Noms: Nightingale’s Nintendo-Themed St. Patrick’s Day

Posted March 12, 2014 by Felisha "Nightingale" Silva in Features

Nightingale here! I come to you with the next installment of GP Om Noms, where I tell you how to make yummy things either from or based on video games! Well, since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, I figured I’d do something a tad different. The Irish in me begged for St. Patrick’s Day Om Noms, while the gamer geek in me begged for a Nintendo Om Noms. I decided to meet in the middle and combine the two! Today, I have scoured the internet in search St. Patrick’s Day-worthy, Nintendo-themed drinks! So what better way to spend St. Patty’s Day with your gamer crew than to create some of these green Nintendo drinks! I’ve comprised a list of eight different drinks, all of which hail from the incredible website, The Drunken Moogle! So let’s get down to business, and start with the different drinks I’ve found, along with all you need to make them yourself!

Who here knows who Tingle is? That creepy lil’ dude that pops up in various Legend of Zelda games, usually peddling maps of some sort? Well, first off I give you the Tingle Shot, both cute and pretty tasty…nothing like its name-sake. To make the Tingle Shot, you’ll need the following:

  • 1 part White tequila
  • 1 part Vodka
  • 1 part Midori
  • 1 maraschino cherry

First up, place the cherry in the bottom of a shot glass, then add the White tequila, vodka, and midori, and enjoy!

The next few I found were all inspired by one of my favorite franchises, Final Fantasy, which to me can count as Nintendo seeing as that’s the system they got their start on! I found three drinks, Diamond Dust, Tonberry, and Cactuar! We’ll start with the ever-so evil, yet super adorable Tonberry! To make this, you’ll need:

  •  .5 ounces of Midori (or any other green melon liqueur)
  • .5 ounces Sour Apple Pucker
  • .5 ounces of Absinthe

Mix all three together in shot glass, and drink up!

Next is the Cactuar! This one has a bit more as far as ingredients are concerned. You’ll need the following:

  • 1 cl Gold Tequila
  • 2 cl Bols Blue
  • 2 1/2 cl Orange Juice
  • 2 cl Pineapple Juice
  • 1 cl Lime juice
  • 1 cl Cointreau
  • 1 orange wedge

Place all ingredients into a drink shaker, then pour into a tall glass filled with ice, and garnish with the orange wedge. A nice Cactuar drink to enjoy, minus the 1,000 Needles….

Our last Final Fantasy themed drink is Diamond Dust! For this, you’ll need:

  • 1 cl Smirnoff Green Apple
  • 2 cl White Rum
  • Sprite, or any other lemon-lime soda you prefer

Fill a cocktail glass about halfway full with crushed ice. Shake the White Rum and Green Apple Smirnoff together and pour over the ice. Top it all off with your lemon-lime soda, and voila! Your very own Diamond Dust drink!

Next is a Pokemon-themed drink! I mean you can’t have a Nintendo-themed anything without at least something to do with Pokemon, am I right? So I found us a Bulbasaur Shot! Drunken Moogle also has an Ivysaur drink and Venusaur drink! But I’ll just list what we need to make the Bulbasaur Shot! For this super green Pokemon shot, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 shot of lime-flavored vodka
  • 1/4 shot lime juice
  • 1/4 shot of midori, or any other green melon liqueur

And it’s all as simple as pouring all of the above into a shot glass, and drinking it up!

Now the next one really isn’t ‘Nintendo’ but it was remade for the Nintendo Wii and it’s one of my all-time favorite games, so it made it onto my list anyways! It’s the Issun Shot, inspired by Okami! To make the Issun Shot, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 10 ml Ty-Ku (Sake)
  • 10 ml Midori
  • 5 ml ginger liqueur
  • 20 ml Matcha Green tea

First off, you’ll have to prepare your green tea accordingly and let cool completely. Once cool, add in other drink ingredients and shake together with ice, then strain into a shot glass. I guarantee you this shot is a whole lot less annoying than Issun himself!

Now this one is based off of everybody’s favorite green dinosaur! Being that the drinks are green-themed, it was only natural that Yoshi would be in the mix sooner or later. So here’s what you will need to create a drink that’s based off of Mario’s sidekick, Yoshi:

  • 2 cl Sour Apple Liqueur
  • 1 cl Melon Bols
  • 1 cl Lime Juice
  • 4 cl Apple Juice

You’ll want to shake everything together and serve over ice! Not only is this drink super green for St. Patty’s Day, but it’s also flavored like Yoshi’s favorite snacks – Apples.

Now, I’ve saved the best for last. This drink in particular is based off of one of my all-time favorite Nintendo titles. As a kid, I played so much Super Metroid on my SNES, it wasn’t even funny. Still to this day I have it memorized. I present to you the Metroid Drink! You’ll need the following:

  • 1/2 shot Bacardi Big Apple Rum
  • 1/2 shot Coconut Rum
  • 1/2 glass Kiwi Strawberry Kool-Aid or Minute Maid
  • About half a glass of Sprite
  • 3 strawberries, stemmed and left whole

Shake together both rums and the kiwi strawberry drink. Pour into a glass and add in the Sprite, and then the strawberries. The strawberries act as the three huge red eyes in a Metroid!

I hope you all enjoy these fun green and nerdy gamer drinks! And remember, if you so choose to drink on St. Patrick’s Day, enjoy yourself and have fun, but remember to drink responsibly and stay safe!
