GP Om Noms: Link’s Heart Container Cookies

Posted January 15, 2014 by Felisha "Nightingale" Silva in Features

Happy New Year, my gamer and gamerettes! Nightingale here, and it’s time for another recipe in GP Om Noms! Seeing as how we’re in the middle of January right now, and February is just around the corner, I thought I’d do a little something that would be a fun thing to make for Valentine’s Day and will also pay homage to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series a bit. Typically, these are called ‘Stained-Glass Cookies’, but since I’m a gamer and I’m turning this into awesome gamer grub, we’ll just call them ‘Link’s Heart Container Cookies’! With a typical sugar cookie dough recipe, two heart-shaped cookie cutters and some delicious, red hard candy, we will make Link’s Heart Containers a reality, a very tasty reality! These would make a perfect gift for your gamer friends, or just because you need a little something sweet.

Let’s jump on into what we will need in order to make the sugar cookie dough. Of course if you already have a favorite sugar cookie dough recipe, feel free to use that, but for those who don’t, this is what you will need to do the dough:

  • 1 cup of butter, softened and unsalted
  • 3/4 cups of sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • Any red hard candies (Jolly Ranchers, Lifesavers, Cinnamon disks, really any red, slightly translucent candy will work.)

First thing you’ll want to do cream the butter in an electric mixer, while adding the sugar just a little at a time. Then add in your large egg and the vanilla extract. Once all of that is mixed to a nice, creamy consistency, add in your salt, and then your flour, adding only one-third of your flour at a time while mixing thoroughly. Once it’s all incorporated, divide the dough in half and wrap with wax paper, shaping it into two disks and put in the fridge to sit and chill over night.

Once the dough has been completely chilled, you’ll want to take it out and with a rolling pin, roll it out to be about one-fourth of an inch thick. To prepare your baking pan, cover with heavy duty foil, and spray generously with non-stick cooking spray. Taking the largest cookie cutter, and cut out your cookies. Once you’ve done that, using your small cookie cutter, cut out the middle of each cookie, leaving a hollow heart-shape in the middle of each one. Once your middle-less cookies have been placed on the baking sheet, take the hard red candy of your choice and place in the middle of each cookie. Once completed, place in a 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes until the cookies turn a nice golden brown and the candies are melted. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes. Once cooled, transfer to a wire racks for them to cool completely. Voila! You now have Link’s Heart Container cookies! Perfect to share with your mate on Valentine’s Day, or when your health is running low and there’s no fairy in sight!
