Tom Clancy Dies at 66

Posted October 3, 2013 by Bunneh3000 in News

This morning, legendary author of military thrillers Tom Clancy died at the age of 66 at a hospital in Baltimore. Announced by a statement made by his publisher, the cause of death is currently undisclosed.

Tom Clancy has meant so much for the gaming industry dating back to 1996 when he founded the Red Storm Entertainment studio. Roughly ten years after the launching of his literary career he leapt into the world of video games and never looked back.

Since the 80’s Clancy’s unnervingly accurate and detailed knowledge of military technology, tactics, espionage, and more have repeatedly wowed active and retired military figures alike in his novels. Each book that he has written starting with the well know 80’s book and movie The Hunt For Red October were the result of countless hours spent interviewing, reading journals, tech manuals, and anything else related to the military. Once an insurance salesman, Clancy quickly became an integral part of pop culture in the 80’s once his books and movies became such a success. His books have managed to spawn 5 Hollywood movies including actors such as Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, and Ben Affleck (all of which who took on the role of the Clancy hero Jack Ryan). Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a movie based on this character (but not a book of Clancy), is scheduled for release this December.

As a result of his amazing writing, his detailed military knowledge has been the focus of a number of great video game franchises. In each of his games, the focus was on bringing attention to either recent political dealings or events that he created that seemed to be possible given the world’s  diplomatic state at that time. Tech shown in the game was typically based on actual research that were in the process of being rolled out to the military. As a result, some of his games were even licensed by the military to assist training soldiers counter-terrorism strategy and tactics.  All holding his name as an integral part of the titles, the franchises include Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, and the upcoming game The Division. The Division is scheduled for release in 2014 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

R.I.P. Tom Clancy
