Nintendo Direct 10-1-13 Rundown
On today’s latest addition to the Nintendo Direct series, a news series brought to you by Nintendo themselves, they talked about the upcoming titles coming to the Wii U and 3DS. First they showed a brand new trailer for Super Mario 3D World, which is due out on November 22nd. In the trailer it shows Bowser kidnap what seems to be some kind of green fairy and then trap her in bottle. I assume based on this that it’s up to Mario and the gang to rescue her. It shows Mario jump up and hit blocks, but instead of the blocks breaking, Mario transforms into the block. For example, one block is a canon. When Mario assumes this block, he becomes a canon, blasting out red orbs, hitting his enemies. In this game you can have fun on a single player mode, or enjoy the game with uo to four players. And coming November 1st, in preparation for the new Mario 3D World, Nintendo is releasing two special edition Wii MotionPlus controllers, one Mario themed one, and a Luigi themed one!
Next, Iwata talked about the new Wii Party U, hitting shelves on October 25th. In this family-fun title, you can play multiple mini-games, from one where you have to carry water in a spoon to fill a jar, to a button sequence game, to a game called Dance With Mii, where players gather around the Wii U GamePad in a circle and move to the beat of the music.
They also announced a delay on a game we were supposed to be seeing this Holiday season. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be delayed until February 2014. The development team needed more time to make the game all it could be, and better than expected.
They spoke about the new Mario and Sonic Olympic Winter Games, and how you will be able to play against others from all over the world. You will also be able to see how your country ranks against another country! The game is set to release on November 15th, and will also be available in a bundle version that includes a light blue Wii MotionPlus controller.
It was announced that Sonic will be a main character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game. This will be his second appearance, his first being in Smash Bros. Brawl.
Players of Pikmin can look forward to a new update today that makes the ranking system better, and will also give you access to a new stage, for free! You will also be able to download new Mission Mode stages via paid DLC.
They talked about some third-party titles, such as the new Etrian Odyssey: Untold Millennium Girl, available today in a bundle pack that includes a soundtrack and comic and art book. This game is exclusively for the 3DS.
They also talked about Just Dance 2014, that will have a Wii Remote bundle. That will be out on October 8th. Skylanders Swap Force will be available for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS come October 13th. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes will make it’s way to the Wii U and 3DS on October 22nd. Arkham Origins: Blackgate will be available on 3DS on October 25th. Sonic Lost World will be on 3DS and Wii U, and will be coming out on October 29th. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be arriving on the Wii U on October 29th. And lastly, they talked about the new Phoenix Wright game, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, coming to the 3DS on October 24th.
And lastly, but certainly not least, they talked about the anticipated 3DS titles coming out and other 3DS news. A fun little tidbit they shared was that if you go on YouTube and watch this Nintendo Direct, you can use the QR reader on Animal Crossing: New Leaf to get your mitts on Link’s adorable lobster shirt from Wind Waker. They talked about the release of the new Nintendo 2DS, where you can play both DS and 3DS games on an open-faced system. That will release on the same day as Pokemon X and Y, on October 12th. There will also be a new update on how StreetPass works. Now when you visit any Nintendo Zone, you will get data from the last six people that visited that specific Zone. You’ll also be able to do it while your system is in sleep mode!
They talked about the new Square Enix game, Bravely Default, a game they had mentioned earlier this year. It will be available the first quarter of 2014, and will be exclusively for the 3DS.
Next they talked about the new Legend of Zelda game coming out for the 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the sequel to A Link to the Past. In this game, they reinvented some of the older conventions of earlier Zelda titles. Before, you attained a certain item per dungeon, and had to use that item to solve puzzles in said dungeon in order to move forwards and advance on to the next dungeon. Well, not anymore. Now you can visit a shop called Ravio’s Shop, where you can rent and eventually buy any item you want, from the hammer to the hookshot. Basically in this game, you choose what dungeons you want to do first, and choose how you advance through the game. This puts a totally new spin on this Zelda title. I’m sure some will love this new freedom, while others not so much.
And right at the end of the show, they debuted a new game for the 3DS coming out sometime in 2014. A brand new, side-scrolling Kirby game, with which they promised more details on that will be revealed soon in the future.
