Will GTA Online Have Microtransactions?

Posted September 25, 2013 by Bunneh3000 in News

Gamers can be so ambitious sometimes.

GTA Online is set to drop on October 1st and one reddit user has a theory that Rockstar may use microtransactions.

A Reddit user took a peek into a XML file that is requested by the game when the store menu is accessed in the pause menu. Within the file are descriptions of “Cash Cards” which apparently can be purchased with real world money to provide in game cash. Here’s a look at the description unveiled by this user:

“Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online,” reads a description of the cards. “All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”

This is by no means proof but it does lead one to believe that something will be available to provide in-game cash. The user did hypothesize that since this file wasn’t intended to be public (too late now buddy) that these items could have been prize packs won through a sweepstakes or a promotion. He even managed to pulled pictures of the ‘cash cards’.

Considering not much information has been revealed about GTA Online, this glimpse could be a significant one. Making cash hard to come by when bunches of players are running around in the same environment could make for some significant power gaps for the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. If the whole microtransaction idea is true, servers could be filled with small groups of players trashing the casual players and beginners.

Taking on heists with your friends could be a big draw for Rockstar’s Social Club addicts if it is done well with some sense of balance to the gameplay.

Rockstar has yet to comment on the discovery but with the release of GTA Online only a week away, we should be hearing something soon.
