Broken Age Cast Revealed

Broken Age

The upcoming Broken Age has made an official cast reveal, during studio Double Fine Productions’ panel at PAX Prime.  Among the most prolific of the cast include Jack Black and Jennifer Hale, as well as other previous Double Fine collaborators such as Richard Horvitz, Nick Jameson, Grey Delisle, and Cree Summer.  Hale is, of course, well-known for a variety of video game characters, foremost among them being Bastila Shan in Knights of the Old Republic and the female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy.  This is only Jack Black’s second video game performance, his first being a previous collaboration with Broken Age visionary Tim Schafer in the 2009 Brutal Legend.  While this could simply be a temporary deal for Black, it may also potentially signal a shift from one more Hollywood notable into the video game scene.

Broken Age was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter in Februrary of last year with a record-breaking $3.5 million brought in by backers.  Though it has suffered a series of setbacks and delays, including admission from Schafer about underestimating his end goals, resulting in the game being split into two, the reveal of this official voice cast is promising.  Though it’s likely a risk bringing in a heavy hitter with name recognition like Jack Black, one can only hope that as with Brutal Legend, it will ultimately pay off for Schafer and his team.

The first half of Broken Age is due for release in January.  Double Fine will then use revenue made from the first half of the game to fund the second half, which is estimated to be out later in 2014, available as a free update to those who have purchased the game.  It is a point-and-click adventure that will be available on Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.  The full cast reveal trailer can be viewed here.
