Ace Combat: Infinity Will Be Free-to-Play

Posted August 9, 2013 by Kat in News

The upcoming Ace Combat: Infinity, which was originally announced by developer Namco Bandai last month, is now set to be a free-to-play game.  In development by the design team Project Aces, it will be released later this year exclusively to the PS3, with a free download made available through the Playstation Network.

The game, as promised by Namco Bandai, will take place on Earth, and feature a brand new story campaign, co-op multiplayer, and other unspecific features that are “important” to fans.  There will also be “tons” of free content, though no information was given as to what will be available for purchase.   So from the sound of it, this may very well work much in the same way so many popular facebook games have, with free basic game access, and additional goodies available for purchase the further and deeper one gets into the game.

Said executive Olivier Comte, “The Ace Combat franchise has evolved dramatically over the years, but never before have we been able to offer its amazing graphics and tactical action for free.”  In addition to being the first game in the franchise to be made available free-to-play, it’s been promised to also include elements from previous games, including certain historical events, superweapons, and original planes.

Ace Combat is a long-running and highly successful franchise that is based around a hybrid of arcade-simulation and flight combat.  The series is built around fast-paced action and dramatic plots, in fictional countries throughout the world.  Longtime fans are rewarded with a relatively amount of continuity in world-building, that general continues from game to game.  The most recent entry in the series, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, was released in 2011 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.  Ace Combat: Infinity, the eighteenth game in the franchise, is due for release later this year.
