A video was released recently from Naoki Yoshida, producer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a complete remake of the earlier MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. And based on what was talked about in the video, a lot more changes have been made, namely to the materia system and adding in the customizing of players’ Chocobos.

Now you will be able to customize your Chocobo to aid your character. And based on the job you choose for your character, that will fluctuate the skills on your Chocobo to be able to work together and assist each other in the game. Players will be able to change jobs at will now, so bear in mind that when doing so, your Chocobo skills will be altered as well. And when the player levels up, their Chocobo will level up as well, to keep both the player and his Chocobo in sync. You can teach your Chocobo new skills through a system that Yoshida describes to be “a lot like a skill tree“. Your Chocobo can also be put in a defensive, offensive or supporting position, all based on your preferences. Also, attributions have been taken away from the Chocobo’s bardgings, so now players can make their Chocobo look however they want without giving up it’s status.

When addressing the Chocobo’s gear system, Yoshida said: “We’ve decided that we’d like players to choose bardings based only on how they want their Chocobo to look. By adding stats to Chocobo armor, we feared everyone would choose the same gear, so we decided to remove attributes from barding completely. We’d like you to pick what you think looks best.

The materia system is also changing as well. Now all gear will have a certain number of slots to add in the materia of your choosing. Say you want more materia than what the gear’s slots will allow, you will have to meld the item. In the past, upon failure of ‘melding’, the item would break, and be rendered useless, but now it will just result in used-up materia as opposed to the loss of an item.

Set to release later on sometime this year, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be a MMORPG to release on Windows PC and PlayStation 3.

I will only be satisfied when they bring the game to Playstation 3 like they’d said they would so many times before. Bleh.
