Wii Mini Coming To Canada

Wii-Mini-Console

The Wii U, Nintendo’s new console, was just released a little over a week ago. However, rumors have surface about a smaller version of Nintendo’s last console, the original Wii, coming to retailers soon. A box art of the Wii Mini appeared on Best Buy Canada’s website, along with a December 7 release date. Initially Nintendo did not comment on the rumor, giving the typical “no comment on rumor or speculation”. However, Nintendo released a press release confirming the redesign is coming to retail but only in Canada for now.

On Dec. 7, the new Wii Mini home console launches in Canada at a suggested retail price of just $99.99 and puts the focus squarely on Wii games. The system can play more than 1,400 disc-based Wii games. Wii Mini is smaller than the original Wii system, and comes in matte black with a red border. The system comes with a red Wii Remote Plus, a red Nunchuk controller and works with most Wii accessories.

Wii Mini is designed exclusively to play Wii games. Its family-friendly design has no Internet capabilities and does not play Nintendo GameCube games. It’s a great value for first-time Wii owners who just want to jump in and experience all the great Wii games that helped usher in a revolution in motion-controlled gaming.

Wii Mini is available exclusively in Canada during the holiday season. No information is available about its potential availability in other territories in the future.

Although the Wii Mini is exclusive to Canada right now, it’s expected to be released in America some time after the holiday season. It’s a bit strange for Nintendo to release a redesign of their old console a week from releasing their new console and a year from a previous redesign. There was a family edition of the Wii that was released a year ago that removed GameCube compatibility and was strictly horizontal if you forgot. Furthermore, Nintendo has confirmed that they are not developing any 1st party titles for the Wii anymore. Also, why did they design it to look like a Fisher Price Walkman?

What do you think, GP peeps? Are you happy for the cheaper alternative for the Wii or is there no point to it this late in the game? Comment below and let us know!
