Ubisoft CEO: “Beyond Good and Evil 2 Still in Development”

Remember Beyond Good and Evil, a game from Rayman creator Michel Ancel that came out back on the PC, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox? It was about a photojournalist uncovering a worldwide Alien conspiracy in the year 2435. It was a fan favorite but didn’t sell too many copies. Still, its underground popularity among game enthusiasts proved enough to get the game an HD remake in June 2011.

However, even bigger news than that was the announcement that a sequel was in development back in May 2008. It has been over four years since that announcement and gamers are still waiting for news on the project, with only a few leaked screenshots, a teaser trailer and some footage from a prototype version of the game to hold them over.

Despite the lack of details on the game’s progression, Ubisoft says that development on Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still ongoing. Currently, the game is being held up due to Michel Ancel working on a variety of other titles, including Rayman Legends, and not being able to devote his full attention to it.

“What’s very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Polygon in an interview. “He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he’s working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has. So the fact is, that working on Legends is slowing the process on Beyond Good and Evil 2.”

This is not to say that Ubisoft isn’t interested in the project; it’s just not a priority. “It’s really a game that we’ve been working, we have worked on, and is a game that we want to do,” he said. “But there are so many things that have to be done that, you know, this one is going to come in line at one point, but at the moment Michel is really on Rayman Legends.” Ancel did say earlier this year that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is being developed for next generation consoles and is still in “active” development.

It’s a shame that this game is essentially stuck in development hell. Beyond Good and Evil 2 was initially constructed with not one but two sequels in mind and the world was meant to span three games. What do you think, gamers? Are you disappointed that the game hasn’t been given priority over other projects or are you just happy that the game is still in development? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think!
