DUST 514 Preview

Dust 514 is going to be the first shooter of its kind in that it is linked to an MMO, EVE Online. SCEA came up with a brilliant idea to make a PC game (EVE Online) and a console game (Dust 514) go hand in hand with actions performed on either one. If players on EVE want advantage to control an area or to control a certain region, they will need to go to forums, perhaps in the game itself, and contract these marines with their feet on the ground.

The one thing that is not so favored about Dust 514 is that it is such a cool concept and awesome idea, but it’s only going to be available for the PS3. SCEA is sticking to the fact that the PS3 is still somewhat popular (not more popular than the Xbox 360) and is honestly hogging this wonderful idea all to themselves. If they could have just networked the social side of the unique plan and formatted the disc for Xbox consoles as well, their fan base would sky rocket and they would really diversify this prototype play style. However, the fact that this game can even provide an opportunity to make people feel as though something they love is their job and they are doing more than just playing a game.

SCEA executed the beta well and while it may be true that this was only possible because EVE Online has one server with a ton of people on it, it’s a great idea either way. The PS3 Network may be a bit more integrated with the internet than Xbox live, but they still would have benefitted from both consoles coming in to this. The game will support massive online battles, vehicle gameplay, and feet on the ground for some first person shooting. The beta has been out for quite some time now and has received great reviews, but let’s see if when the game goes live, it can truly deliver.
