Soulcalibur V Characters Carved into a Mountain

Posted February 2, 2012 by Taylor Stein in News

Move over Mount Rushmore, there’s a new geographical carving in town. Who could possibly be more important to memorialize onto the side of a mountain other than the characters from Soulcalibur V? To commemorate the release of the fighting extravaganza for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, Mitsurugi and Pyrrha have been permanently engraved in granite on a mountain in Tanum, Sweden.

The game developers have high hopes for the fifth installment, describing it as the toughest one yet. What better way to prove their tenacity than cutting the two sword-wielding characters into the Earth?
“Everyone knows the Soulcalibur characters are among the hardest fighters in gaming – so we’ve decided to immortalize them in granite for thousands of years” says Lee Kirton, marketing director, Namco Bandai. “These characters have only ever existed digitally, so it’s brilliant to record them permanently in a format which remain visible until the end of time.”

The last remaining stone engraver on the Swedish west coast, Göran Andersson led the project. The master stone carver has vast experience working out in nature and has done engravings for celebrities such as movie star Ingrid Berman, and nobilities including the kings of Sweden and Norway.

“This is the by far most complex and detailed engraving I have ever performed”, Göran Andersson. “But it was very fun to do.”

With the aid of SavedinStone, Namco Bandai engraved the Soulcalibur V characters on a mountain near a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with Bronze Age stone carvings.

If you could immortalize any character in the side of a mountain what would it be? I might be partial to Metal Gear’s Big Boss myself.
