Recommendation of the Week: Ms. Splosion Man

Posted July 15, 2011 by Esteban Cuevas in Features

One of my favorite XBLA games now has a sequel and it looks like it’ll be better than the last. Added features like rail sliding, new outdoors locals and epic boss battles follows the traditional of Pac-Man in that the fairer sex has the better game. Ms. Splosion spurts out one liners like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Draaamaaa”, and “What a Man, What a Man, What a Man, What a Man, What a Mighty Good Man” while she runs, skips and tiptoes through the levels, sploding scientists, machinery and platforms along the way.
Ms. Splosion Man, for those who don’t know, is a platformer game with only one button. SPLODE! Ms. S can only explode in order to jump, although she can do this three times before having to recharge. She can recharge by landing on the ground or collecting different switches or items that refuel her ability to SPLODE! You’ll have to solve puzzles along the way and use new directional barrels (think Donkey Kong Country) to traverse each level.

One of the greatest features of the game is the “2 Girls, 1 Controller” mode, in which two players will controller Ms. Splosion Man and Splosion Man, respectively, using only one controller. Player one will use the left analog stick and the left bumper button to move and explode and player two will use the right analog stick and the face buttons.

When games like this are released, it makes me really miss my Xbox 360. Unfortunately, none of my immediate friends own a 360 so I don’t have another means to play it (not that they would buy a game for me on their system, although they SHOULD). Games like this proved that simple fun can still be had this generation and we don’t need mature themes and bloated Call of Duty budgets to enjoy ourselves. Give Twisted Pixel your money because we need more developers like this.

Each week, I’ll recommend a game for you all to play. These aren’t reviews so much as they are suggestions, as I won’t weigh pros and cons of the game. Most of these choices will be new games released that week but some will be games that were previously released and fell by the way side. On occasion, I’ll recommend older retro titles because sometimes you need to retreat to move forward! I’ll do this segment every Friday so feel free to let me know what titles you’d like to see be my Recommendation of the Week.
