Mega Man Legends 3 Project cancelled

On July 18, 2011, Dev Room (a website designed to allow fans to participate in the design process of Mega Man Legends 3 Project) Community Liaison “GregaMan” announced that development of both Mega Man Legends 3 Project and the bonus game Mega Man Legends 3 Prologue, the latter game originally intended for the 3DS’ eShop, would be cancelled, as a result of the company feeling that it did not meet its criteria. Along with it, the Dev Room would no longer be used, though it and the accompanying forum would remain up indefinitely, according to GregaMan. He also affirmed that the ownership of any content submitted would be returned to the owner, and those whose content was chosen for the game would receive a commemorative gift.

Personally, I can appreciate why they would want to do this, as there are a number of factors involved. The 3DS for example is not setting the charts on fire, and Mega Man itself has not been a very significant property for Capcom lately. Even still, it is worrisome to me that they would cancel two Mega Man games in such close proximity to each other (the other being Mega Man Universe, a cancelled online Mega Man platform game). We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but I fear that the consumer backlash could very well be significant.

I personally don’t have any attachment to the Legends series but I do think it’s sad due to the overwhelming fan support it had.

I played both games in the series as a kid so I was really looking forward to the 3rd game. There goes my happiness for the day.

I read somewhere that the 3DS sold “3.61 million 3DS handheld systems” in Japan, Europe, US and Australia. The cancellation of the game will prove to affect any future sales but is certainly NOT the reason they cancelled it. Why would Capcom not want to sell to 3.61 Million 3DS users?
